Peak District Towns and Villages

Earl Sterndale

The small but pretty village of Earl Sterndale is situated amid beautiful Peak District countryside in the Upper Dove Valley in Derbyshire, close to the Staffordshire border.  It is a popular base for walkers, lying in the foothills of the distinctive Parkhouse and Chrome Hills, and within pleasant walking distance of Dovedale.  The village economy is mostly based on farming and quarrying, as it has been for centuries.  The farms surrounding the village were originally monastic granges maintained from Basingwerk Abbey in Flintshire, Wales, which owned significant amounts of land in Derbyshire.  The village today is a busy, friendly community, with a thriving school, as...

Grindon

Grindon Village Staffordshire Grindon is a very pretty village in the Staffordshire Peak District, on the southern edges of the National Park.  It lies to one end of the Manifold Valley, surrounded by stunning White Peak countryside.  Grindon is an ancient village, mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.  The origins of the name are likely to have come from Grendon, or Green Hill, which is perfectly suited to the area.  The economy then, as now, was mostly made up of farming, primarily using pasture land for sheep and cattle. Like so many White Peak villages, the surrounding landscape is made up of rolling green...

Butterton

The picturesque village of Butterton lies in the Staffordshire Peak District, overlooking the beautiful Manifold Valley.  The lanes of the village are lined with pretty sandstone cottages, and a substantial ford (Hoo Brook) runs through the centre along a cobbled street.  Like many villages in the area, Butterton’s history over centuries was linked with copper and lead mining.  There is evidence of extensive mining industry here from at least the 17th Century, at which time the Duke of Devonshire owned the mineral rights to the local copper mines.  A number of packhorse routes pass through the region, particularly around nearby Ecton Hill, once used by...

Sheldon

The small village of Sheldon in the Derbyshire Peak District, perched high above the River Wye, is an absolute gem.  Surrounded by stunning White Peak limestone countryside, it is a cluster of characterful stone cottages on a hill, mostly built along one single lane.  The village is an ancient one, recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, and became an important centre for lead mining in the 18th and 19th Centuries, at which time its population boomed.  Magpie Mine, located just outside the village, is the most complete example of an 18th Century lead mine remaining in the Peak District, probably in the UK.  Dating...

Rainow

The small but pretty village of Rainow lies on the eastern side of the Peak District border between Cheshire and Derbyshire, in the valley of the River Dean.  It is surrounded by stunning countryside, with rolling hills to the east and the expansive Cheshire Plain to the west.  On a clear day there are views to the distant Welsh hills.  Rainow’s name derives from the Old English Hraefn Hoe, meaning Ravens’ Hill.  The first records of the village date back to the late 13th Century, and in early Medieval times the area was part of the royal hunting forest of Macclesfield.  Rainow was an important...

A happy marriage and an unusually loving relationship

The Peak District makes a great loving partner. One way of looking at my relationship with the Peak District, may be that I am married to it. Well at least it feels a bit like that. A Ruby Anniversary… 40 years on. It all started at the age of 13 when I would be dropped off at the farm at the top of Winnats Pass with a tent, a geological hammer and some food for a few days. Armed with Geological Survey maps I would hunt out mine workings and try to find Blue John hydrothermal seams as well as minerals discarded as old mine...
