The Living Rug Company The Living Rug Company in the Staffordshire Peak District Hello and welcome to my first blog on Let's Go Peak District. I am from Yorkshire originally and I have moved about quite a bit.  I came to live in the Peak District about thirty years ago.  I now live in the Staffordshire Moorlands just on the edge of the Peak District and have lived here for just over ten years.  The farm is quite remote and is about...

Bollington

Bollington is a small but bustling town on the outskirts of the Peak District National Park in Cheshire.  It is surrounded by beautiful countryside in the western foothills of the Pennines, just above the Cheshire Plains. Bollington boomed in the 18th and 19th Century during the Industrial Revolution, when it developed as a centre for cotton mills, quarries and coal mines.  When the Macclesfield Canal opened in the 1830s this brought further prosperity to the area.  Bollington is still a thriving town, renowned for its lovely independent shops, cafes and pubs.  A number of the historic mills still stand, many now converted to apartments, revealing...

Stanton in Peak

Stanton in Peak The beautiful village of Stanton in Peak is a little gem: pretty stone cottages clustered on a hillside, overlooking the most spectacular countryside.  Peak District Village - Stanton In Peak The village has a great deal of history.  It was granted a Royal Charter in 968 under the name Stantune, meaning Stony Farm, and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as part of the barony of Henry de Ferrers.  By the 1750s the village was jointly owned by the Duke of Rutland and the Thornhill family.  The descendants of the Thornhill family still live in the (private) stately home of...

Curbar

The very pretty village of Curbar lies on a hillside, perfectly positioned overlooking the River Derwent, sheltering under the mighty gritstone edges of Curbar Edge and Baslow Edge.      This is an ancient village, growing at a crossing point of the River Derwent and the packhorse route between Sheffield and Manchester.  Bar Road, one of the main roads through the village, is an old Roman packhorse road.  The village has an interesting history in more modern times too; the Great Plague came to Curbar in the 1630s, more than 30 years before it broke out in London and in the famous local plague village of...

Calver

The pretty village of Calver lies on the border between the White Peak and the Dark Peak, situated on the River Derwent and surrounded by the most beautiful scenery.  There is evidence that this part of the Derwent Valley has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and Calver itself is an ancient village, mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.  It is made up of three distinct areas: Calver Bridge, Calver Sough (pronounced ‘Suff’) to the north, and the main village itself.  The older part of the main village has a cluster of lovely stone cottages gathered around an ancient village cross.  There is also a...

Miller’s Dale

The small but perfectly formed village of Miller’s Dale lies on the banks of the beautiful River Wye, surrounded by the limestone crags of the White Peak. Miller’s Dale grew with the arrival of the Midland Railway in 1867, which linked Manchester with London. It was a busy community at that time, as a junction on the railway line and a centre for limestone quarrying. Many of the cottages in the village were originally constructed as housing for the railway and quarry workers and their families. The railway closed just over a hundred years later, and the former track has been restored as a pedestrian...
