Baslow

Baslow The beautiful village of Baslow is on the edge of the Chatsworth Estate, and makes a perfect place to stay when visiting the area.  The village is overlooked by the dramatic gritstone edges of Curbar Edge and Baslow Edge, and the River Derwent runs through it, crossed by a picturesque stone bridge that dates back to 1603. There has been a settlement in this location since Anglo-Saxon times.  Visitors will still find a wealth of ancient buildings lining its maze-like streets, including a distinctive toll house on the stone bridge.  This tiny 17th Century building was once staffed by villagers who took payment from...

Stanage Edge

Stanage Edge Stanage Edge is a mighty gritstone escarpment north of the pretty village of Hathersage.  It's hugely popular with rock climbers, who travel from all over the country to take on the many challenges provided by its sheer faces. Stanage runs for almost four miles roughly north to south, from Moscar Moor to Burbage, rising to 458 metres (1,503 feet) at High Neb, its highest point. In many ways Stanage is the epitome of the Dark Peak. Its gritstone plateau is a wild place, often harsh and brooding, with sharp winds that will take your breath away.  But the views from the top are just...

Edensor

Beautiful Edensor Edensor (pronounced ‘Enzer’) is a small but pretty village situated within the grounds of the Chatsworth House estate in the Peak District National Park.  The original village was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, at which time it was located along the River Derwent, where the buildings were visible from Chatsworth House.  This view displeased the then Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish, however, and between 1838 and 1842 the entire village was dismantled.  Many of the residents were moved to the nearby Chatsworth villages of Beeley and Pilsley, and the planning and building of a new village, over the brow of a hill...
