The Peak District National Park is a truly inspiring place, and the tales told by the area’s people are every bit as varied, intriguing and wonderful as the landscape. Our Peak District Voices page is a platform for fascinating stories from every corner of the Peak District, told by the people who know the place best. Their experiences are all different, but tied together by a passion for this beautiful place that inspires them every day.

SHEFFIELD: Gateway to the Peak District

The Outdoor City, Sheffield When you talk to most Sheffielders, what they love about the city is the proximity to the Peak District National Park. In fact a third of Sheffield actually overlaps with the Peak District, making it the only major city in the UK with a National Park within its boundary. It’s a little known fact that surprises a lot of people, especially those who’ve never visited Sheffield and still think of it as one of those bleak industrial cityscapes. The truth is Sheffield is green, hilly and compact, with an attractive public realm ready to surprise you as soon as you step off at Sheffield Train Station into The Outdoor City. Life Lines: How Fishing at Ladybower Reservoir is Transforming Lives

Life-Giving Water The cool, clear waters of Ladybower Reservoir have been nurturing life for over 75 years.  The reservoir was built between 1935 and 1943, and at that time it was the largest reservoir in Britain.  It was built to supply the growing water demands of the East Midlands, and the reservoirs of the Upper Derwent Valley still provide life-giving water to this part of England; they have a staggering combined capacity of 464 billion litres.  Ladybower Reservoir also enriches life in less obvious ways.  The open moorland, towering forests and shady banks that surround the reservoirs are home to shy mountain hares, birds and butterflies.  Trout, perch, roach and pike hide in the depths of the calm waters.  It is a peaceful haven for...
